Spotlight on Carnaby Iris: Colour and Calm in Winter

A Study in Stillness and Colour

Winter brings a slower rhythm — light softens, and colour takes on a quiet strength. Carnaby Iris was painted in summer, yet it holds the same calm balance that winter light reveals: warmth within stillness, vibrancy softened by shadow.

Created digitally using layered brushwork in Procreate, the composition draws from the sculptural form of the bearded iris — a flower known for its poise and rhythm. Deep plum and rust tones contrast with soft coral and apricot, creating harmony between structure and softness, balance and light.

Inspiration and Process

The inspiration for this piece came from observing Iris germanica varieties in full bloom — their folds, shadows, and the way each petal catches light differently.

Painted digitally in Procreate, Carnaby Iris was built through layers of translucent colour, allowing the flower’s tone and structure to emerge gradually. The process was slow and reflective — a study in patience and balance.

Though created in the brightness of summer, the artwork was designed to feel timeless. Its muted blue-green background anchors the warmth of the petals, creating a composition that transitions easily between seasons — carrying the feeling of sunlight into quieter months.

A Sense of Place

The Botanical Collection was created as a reflection of stillness — art that holds the calm of nature within crafted interiors. Each piece captures a moment of observation, translated into quiet tone and form.

Within this collection, Carnaby Iris represents both structure and grace. Its warm hues bring colour and light into winter interiors, while its balanced composition creates a sense of quiet renewal — a gentle reminder of the life held within stillness.

Light, Texture, and Tone

When framed and hung, Carnaby Iris responds beautifully to changing light. Morning brings out coral and apricot tones; dusk deepens the plums and rusts into gentle bronze.

Printed on museum-grade fine art paper using archival pigment inks, each print retains the subtle texture and tonal variation of the original digital painting — designed to last, and to reward close observation over time.

Artist’s Note

“This piece was painted during summer, when the garden was at its most vibrant. I wanted to hold that warmth within a quiet composition — something that could live calmly through winter and beyond.”
